Abstract
Resume
The geographically Iimited occurrence of acute he morrhagic fever in the central mountaneous parts of Korea (mainly localized in Chulwon and kimwha areas
1 during the Korean war, 1950-1954, made it necessary to undertake an ectoparasitic survey of small mammals in and around Seoul city areas to ;valuate hazards from all arthropod pests present.
The survery was made during the calender year of 1955 and a total of 633 house and field rats were trapped alive with cage traps at different sections of Seoul city including Ducksom water plant campus. Taxonomical identification was thus performed to the isolated ectoparasites from the rodents with routine procedures.
Summary:
1) The ectoparasites material was taken from 633 trapped rats and a listing of the roents examined for ectoparasites is present in Table 1 of hereinbefore. None of rats was found to be free -from pest infes-

2) Ectoparasites(a) Fleas: A total of fleas were taken from rodents, being three families, namely Ceratophyllidae, Pulicidae and Hystrichopsyllidae(see Table 2 of hereinbefore.). The most common species were Monopsyllas anisus, Xenopsylla cheopis. A flea index per rat is 0.3 on the average that is quite below compare with others elsewhere. (b) Mites: A total of 1, 912 mites were taken from rodents .nd the taxonomical breakdown indicated that there were
five families representing genera species( see Table 3 of hereinbefore.). A mite index per rat was 3. The species most consistently encountered were Laelaptidae and Liponyssidae; namely L. echidninus
L. nuttali, L. jettmari, H. glasgowi, B. bacoti and N. carnifex. Trombiculid mites known as a potential vector of acute hemorrhagic fever in Korea was not fount from the rats trapped in Seoul city but was
found in Ducksom water plant campus. (c) A total of 39 lice were isolated and these belonged to Polyplax and Hoplopleura species.
